Pound Slips on Market Jitters Over UK Finances

GBP/USD moved from 1.3546 to 1.3367 as soaring UK long-term gilt yields have raised fiscal concerns. 30 year UK gilt yields surged to near 5.68%- the highest level since 1998. This happened after PM Starmer announced a reshuffle in cabinet. The market expectations about the BoE interest rate policy is now in prime focus as the decision to cut interest rates, or remain restrictive.

The Canadian Dollar ran out of steam on Monday, snapping a four-session winning streak and posting its first loss against the USD in a week. The Canadian economy is broadly slowing down faster than analysts expected, thanks to a slow-motion trade war with the USA and Trump’s tariffs. Damage is expected to continue pressing down on Canadian economic activity, and despite market hopes for further central bank interest rate cuts on both sides of the boarder, CAD is still running largely at the mercy of broad-market USD flows.
